Russ was born in New York and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Packer Collegiate Institute and Bronx High School of Science before going to Babson College. He then graduated from Babson College with a degree in economics, marketing and entrepreneurial studies.

After graduating from Babson College, his love of football lead him to Los Angeles where he secured an unpaid position with the UCLA Bruins as a part-time Recruiting Intern under Bill Rees. This was the beginning of his Scouting career. After a season at UCLA, Russ landed a position with the then Los Angeles Rams as a Pro Scouting Intern, under Jack Faulkner. Russ moved from an unpaid intern to a scouting administrator from 1994 to 1998 and learned from some of the best football minds – Jack Faulkner, Dick Vermeil, Mike White, Bud Carson, Charley Armey and Nick Aliotti. After leaving the Rams following the 1998 NFL Draft, Russ founded GM Jr Scouting and published his first annual GM Jr’s Guide to the NFL Draft (“The Guide”), starting with the 1999 NFL Draft. In addition to publishing The Guide, Russ was hired by the XFL as an East Coast Scout. After publishing The Guide to the 1999 and 2000 NFL Drafts, while working for both the XFL and CBS Sports NFL Today Show, Russ was hired as the Browns Midwest Blesto Scout. As a Scout for the Browns, Russ evaluated all senior players at over 70 Midwest colleges and universities.
